You’ve Tried Every Trick In The Book. So Why Aren’t Things Shifting?
You sorted out your diet. You took the supplements. You cleaned up your lifestyle. You followed the protocol.
Yet you’re still absolutely knackered. Still bloated. Still struggling with your hormones. Still wondering why your body isn’t responding the way it’s supposed to.
Most women assume they simply haven’t found the right fix yet. But I reckon there’s something else going on. Often, the missing piece isn’t another supplement, another practitioner, or another strict diet. It’s the state your body is actually operating from.
Because healing only happens when the body feels safe enough to repair. It’s not just about feeling emotionally safe; it’s about being biologically safe.
Your Body Has Two Main Jobs
At any given moment, your body is prioritising one of two things: protection or repair. It simply cannot fully do both at the same time.
When your nervous system detects safety, your system can put its energy into:
- Digestion
- Hormone production
- Immune regulation
- Tissue repair
- Detoxification
- Energy production
- Fertility
- Recovery
When your nervous system detects a threat, those same resources are shunted over towards survival. Your body becomes focused on keeping you alive rather than helping you thrive. This isn’t a glitch in the system; it’s just basic biology.
What Happens When You’re Stuck In Survival Mode?
Most people think of stress as something that’s just in their head. Your body sees it quite differently.
From a biological perspective, stress is any signal that tells your system the environment might not be safe. This could include:
- Chronic work pressure
- Financial stress
- Relationship drama
- Poor sleep
- Trauma or grief
- Overtraining
- Blood sugar instability
- Inflammation
- Chronic infections
- Nutrient deficiencies
The body doesn’t separate emotional stress from physical stress; it just reacts. Over time, your nervous system can become organised around protection rather than repair. This is when symptoms really start to flare up.
Signs Your Body May Be Stuck In Survival
You may feel:
- Tired but wired
- Exhausted but unable to actually relax
- Constantly overwhelmed
- Easily startled
- Unable to switch off at night
- Anxious without knowing why
- Needing a coffee just to get through the day
- Unable to handle stress like you used to
You may also deal with:
- Bloating and IBS symptoms
- Food sensitivities
- Hormone imbalances
- Weight gain around the tummy
- Poor recovery
- Chronic fatigue
- Autoimmune symptoms
- Frequent infections
Many women spend years trying to treat these symptoms one by one. Hardly anyone stops to ask why the body created them in the first place.
The Fight Or Flight Response Was Never Meant To Be Permanent
Your stress response is incredibly intelligent. When it’s activated, it cranks up your alertness and prepares you for action. Your heart rate rises, blood flow shifts, stress hormones spike, digestion slows, and repair processes are put on hold.
This response is a lifesaver during genuine danger. The problem is that many women are living in a constant mild version of this state. Before you know it, weeks become months, and months become years. The body never receives a clear signal that it is safe enough to finally stand down.
Why Treatment Protocols Often Fail
This is where many health approaches miss the mark. They focus entirely on the symptom: sort out the gut, balance the hormones, reduce inflammation, or support detoxification.
These interventions can absolutely be helpful, but if the nervous system remains stuck on high alert, the results often don’t last or don’t happen at all. It’s a bit like trying to renovate a house while the fire alarm is still going off. The body continues to prioritise protection, and the treatment is basically fighting an uphill battle against the state of your system. Healing hasn’t worked yet because the state that allows healing hasn’t been activated.
The Vagus Nerve And The Biology Of Safety
One of the big players in healing is the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve helps regulate digestion, heart rate, inflammation, immune function, and stress resilience.
When your vagus nerve is doing its job, the body is much more able to shift into a state of rest, repair, and recovery. When stress becomes chronic, this flexibility can fade away. The goal isn’t to eliminate stress; the goal is to increase your body’s capacity to move out of protection and back into repair.
You Cannot Supplement Your Way Out Of Survival
This is often the hardest pill to swallow. Many women have cupboards overflowing with supplements. They’ve invested thousands of dollars into protocols, yet they still feel stuck.
Supplements can support your physiology, correct deficiencies, and improve biochemical function. What they cannot do is convince a nervous system that still feels unsafe to fully let go of protection. Safety isn’t something you’ll find in a pill bottle; it is built through biology.
What Actually Helps The Body Feel Safe?
Safety is created through consistent signals, not perfection and not another overly restrictive plan.
Signals of safety may include:
- Stable blood sugar
- Quality sleep
- Proper nourishment
- Supportive relationships
- Solid boundaries and rest
- Nervous system regulation practices
- Getting outdoors
- Movement that doesn’t leave you flat out
- Addressing unresolved physiological stressors
This is why healing often requires a much broader conversation than just discussing symptoms. I need to understand what your body has been reacting to. This often entails painfully honest life reflections.
The Biology Of Healing
The women I work with are often doing everything right. They’re motivated, committed, and intelligent. They’ve done the reading and followed the advice to the letter, yet their bodies remain stuck.
What changes everything is understanding that symptoms are usually just protective responses rather than a sign your body is broken. When we stop fighting the body and start creating the conditions for safety, regulation, and capacity, healing becomes possible. Not because we forced it, but because your biology finally supports it.
Healing starts when the body feels safe. That is not a mindset; it is a biological requirement.
If you’ve tried the diets, supplements and protocols but still feel stuck, it may be time to look at what’s happening underneath your symptoms.
