If you’ve ever kicked off a health programme, sorted out your diet, taken supplements, or begun unpacking stress and trauma, only to feel absolutely knackered or worse before you feel better, you’re not alone.
Many women find themselves reckoning with the same questions:
“Is this actually normal?”
“Am I making things worse?”
“Shouldn’t getting healthy feel a bit better than this?”
The answer is a lot more nuanced than most people realise.
Healing is rarely a straight line. In fact, one of the most misunderstood aspects of recovery is what I call the healing paradox. Sometimes, the very process of getting better can feel downright uncomfortable.
What Is The Healing Paradox?
The healing paradox describes the experience of symptoms yo-yoing, intensifying, or changing as the body moves from a state of protection into a state of repair.
Most people expect healing to look like a steady upward climb:
- More energy.
- Better digestion.
- Improved sleep.
- Less pain.
While those outcomes are absolutely the goal, the path to get there is often far less predictable. The body heals in layers. As one area begins to improve, another may pop up in your awareness. As your capacity increases, the body may start processing things it previously didn’t have the fuel to deal with.
Healing can feel messy because the body is an adaptive biological system doing its best to keep up.
Why Healing Doesn’t Always Feel Like Healing
Many women come to me after trying everything under the sun.
They’ve cleaned up their diet, taken the supplements, followed the protocols, and seen a fair few practitioners. Yet they still feel stuck. Often, this creates the expectation that the next intervention should be the silver bullet and produce immediate results.
But healing isn’t simply about adding the right supplement or cutting the right food. It is about changing the state the body is operating from. If your biology has been organised around protection for months or years, it takes time for the system to shift. The body does not suddenly move from survival to thriving the moment you change your breakfast.
Survival Mode And Repair Mode Cannot Happen At The Same Time
One of the most important concepts to understand is that survival and repair are two completely different biological states.
When the nervous system perceives a threat, whether physical, emotional, environmental, or physiological, the body’s priority becomes protection, resources are directed towards being on high alert and survival. Functions that support long-term repair get pushed to the back burner.
- Digestion slows.
- Hormone production goes a bit haywire.
- Sleep quality declines.
- Inflammation can increase.
- Energy production becomes less efficient.
This is not dysfunction. It is adaptation. The body is prioritising what it thinks is most important for survival. Healing begins when the body feels safe enough to flip the switch and redirect resources towards repair.
Why Symptoms Can Sometimes Increase
There are several reasons symptoms may temporarily become more obvious.
Increased Awareness
When you’ve lived in a state of chronic stress for years, disconnecting from the body can become second nature. As regulation improves, you often become more aware of sensations that were previously ignored or overridden. The symptom isn’t necessarily new, your awareness of it is finally waking up.
The Nervous System Is Changing State
Many women have spent years soldiering on through fatigue, stress, pain, and exhaustion. As the nervous system begins to downshift, the body may finally reveal just how spent it has been. What felt manageable through sheer determination may suddenly feel overwhelming. This isn’t necessarily regression; sometimes it is the body finally telling the truth.
Gut And Microbiome Changes
When digestive function improves or dietary changes are introduced, the gut ecosystem begins to adapt. Motility may change, and bloating may temporarily increase. This does not automatically mean something is wrong; it means the terrain is shifting.
Hormonal Recalibration
Hormones operate within a complex network involving the nervous system, thyroid, liver, gut, adrenal glands, and brain. As one part of the system changes, others often have to adapt alongside it. This can create periods of temporary instability before you find your feet.
The Difference Between A Healing Response And A Sign Something Is Wrong
Not every symptom increase should be ignored. There is an important difference between temporary adaptation and an intervention that isn’t quite right for you.
A healing response is typically temporary and manageable. A poorly timed intervention often creates worsening symptoms that continue to spiral without improvement. This is why context matters and why blindly pushing through the pain is rarely helpful. Healing is not about forcing the body; it is about listening to it. So many of my patients are not patience and simply push too hard.
Why Pushing Harder Often Backfires
When progress feels slow, the temptation is often to do more: more supplements, more restrictions, more strict protocols.
Unfortunately, this approach often adds further stress to an already overwhelmed system. You cannot supplement your way out of survival. You cannot force repair through willpower. And you cannot build health by constantly fighting your body. This simply takes time.
Sometimes the next step forward is not another intervention. Sometimes it is creating enough safety for the work you’ve already started to actually take hold.
Capacity Must Be Built Before Healing Can Expand
One of the most overlooked concepts in health is capacity. Capacity is your body’s ability to handle stress, adapt, recover, and repair. Without capacity, even the best treatment plan can feel too much.
This includes:
- Nervous system capacity
- Emotional capacity
- Metabolic capacity
- Digestive capacity
- Physical capacity
Many women focus entirely on what they need to remove. Few focus on what needs to be built. Real healing needs both.
What Healing Often Looks Like Before It Looks Better
Many of the earliest signs of healing are quite subtle. You may notice:
- Better sleep before you get more energy
- More resilience before the symptom resolves
- Improved recovery after stress
- Less anxiety around food
- Fewer crashes after busy periods
- More good days than bad days
These shifts may not feel dramatic, but they signal that the underlying state of the system is changing. And that is what really matters.
The Real Goal Isn’t Symptom Perfection
Most women initially seek help because they want symptoms gone. That makes sense. But over time, many realise the deeper goal is much grander.
They want freedom. They want energy. They want confidence in their body again. They want to travel without fear, enjoy meals without anxiety, and move without exhaustion. They want to participate fully in life.
Healing is not about becoming symptom-free at all costs. It is about gently creating a body that has the capacity to support the life you actually want to live.
Healing Is Not A Straight Line
The healing paradox can feel incredibly frustrating when you’re in the middle of it. Progress and setbacks will often coexist. Some weeks feel easier than others. Symptoms may improve, then flare; energy may rise, then dip.
This does not automatically mean what you’re doing is incorrect. Or that supplement or plan is wrong for you. It usually means your body is doing what biology has always done: healing in layers, healing in stages, and healing at the pace your system can safely sustain.
This is where support and guidance is incredibly important. To keep you on track when you are feeling uncertain.
The goal is not to rush the process. The goal is to create the conditions where repair can actually happen. Because when the body feels safe enough to heal, real change becomes possible. This takes time.
If you’re doing the work but still wondering whether your body is actually moving in the right direction, you don’t have to keep guessing.
